Methods to Improve the Appearance of a Wide Donor Scar

There are 3 basic ways to improve the appearance of linear scars from previous strip hair transplant procedures. The first is to surgically revise it or perform a scar revision.  This involves removing the scar tissue and then re-closing it again.

The second method is to add hair into the scar using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgical method during which Individual follicular units are extracted and then carefully placed in the scar.
 
The third method is to add micro-pigmentation or tattooing the scar at a specialized center for this.
 
Of all three methods, I prefer to transplant good hair into the scar using the FUE method. It is the simplest and allows for great results.

Hairstyles that Cause Hair Loss

The Healthy Hair Diet

We get asked daily about the relationship between healthy hair and personal diets. Hair needs proper nutrition to grow and thrive.  If you want to improve your hair's health, make sure your diet includes foods which nourish your hair with the following:
 
Folic acid, which can be found in soybean and wheat and helps avert hair thinning.

Vitamin A, found in spinach and dairy products and promotes a healthy scalp. If the scalp is dry, inflamed or exposed to less-than ideal conditions, growth can be hindered.

Vitamin B,  which is found in red meat and green leafy vegetables. This is key for healthy hair growth.
 
Biotin, which is part of the B-complex, makes the follicle have more elastic properties and prevents hair breakage. It can be found in oats, brown rice, beans and fish.
 
Vitamin C, including citrus fruits in adequate levels are linked to healthier hair. It helps support healthy keratin.
 
And don't forget to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water!

This is my 7th year doing exclusively hair transplants and several thousand cases later, I truly believe FUE (follicular unit extraction) is a great procedure and is here to stay.
 
The benefits are: no linear scar in the back- you can wear your hair as low as you want in the back.  That is great news, no limits on styling your hair. Pull out the clippers and cut it down!  No stitches in the back to remove, and none of that tight feeling in the back for weeks after the procedure.  Less pain in the donor area has also been reported to me by my patients.  The area were the grafts are placed seems to heal in the standard fashion.
 
FUE seems to be ideal for people who to wear their hair short in the back, people with a history of multiple procedures with a tight scalp (where another strip incision would leave a terrible scar) and people who say," I just don't want the scar." FUE is also done on all textures of hair, and works equally well.
 
Just like anything experience is everything.  I have done hundreds of these procedures and am quite proficient at it.  I have done it on celebrities and regular people, like you and me, all day long. I even did the procedure on my oldest son 23 years old.  His hair looks great, and of course he wears his hair in the back super close!
 
Anyone thinking of doing a hair transplant should consider this option.  Make sure the doctor is doing the extractions (removing the hair) instead of a tech or nurse, and make sure that your doctor is an expert at the technique.

How does diet affect your hair?

Remember the old adage, “You are what you eat”.  Well, it applies to you hair too! Hair health can be an indicator of an insufficient “hair diet”.  Since hair is mostly composed of protein, a protein rich diet can help strengthen your hair follicles. Women especially can suffer hair loss due to iron deficiency.  While there are many good and necessary vitamins and supplements, nothing compares to old-fashioned common sense when it come to diet and healthy hair.  Eating a well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water assists in promoting healthy, shiny hair.

 

FDA-approved over the counter minoxidil comes in two strengths -- a 2% for women and 5% solution for men.
But I believe women may see better results with the stronger preparation.
A study in the April 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology compared 48 weeks of treatment with 2% and 5% minoxidil in women with female pattern hair loss. Compared with placebo, 5% minoxidil was superior in regards to hair count and patient and researchers' evaluations of hair growth. While the 2% solution improved hair count and researchers' assessments of hair growth, the patients did not appear to notice a significant improvement in hair growth. Overall, both doses were well tolerated by the 381 women in the study without serious side effects. However, there were more side effects with the 5% solution -- more itching and irritation as well as hair growth in areas other than the scalp, such as on the forehead.

I often recommend the new Rogaine Foam (5% minoxidil) because this vehicle seems to be less irritating to the scalp and easier for women to use.

Minimizing the Damaging Effects of Sea Salt and Chlorine

 

Washing out the sea salt and chlorine from swimming in pools and the ocean is important as both work as drying agents on your hair which can make your hair brittle and lifeless.  Washing with a mild shampoo daily if necessary is recommended to protect your scalp and hair follicles from the salt and chlorine. Preventative measures are to use a leave-in conditioner or to soak the hair with tap water prior to swimming to prevent the chlorine or salt from penetrating into the cortex of the hair shaft and damaging the cuticle.
